Mixtape Review: Summer Knights by Joey Bada$$

We're more than pleased with release of Joey BadA$$' new 17 track mixtape “Summer Knights”. In our opinion, BadA$$ is on track to being one of the greats. Hip Hop needs an artist like Joey BadA$$ right now, more than ever. Certain genres in rap have strayed from the art of storytelling, which has created a disconnection between the artist and the audience. That said, with “Summer Knights” Joey did the exact opposite. This tape is dope, plain and simple.

BadA$$ comes in with a 90’s flow and style that brings you back to the days of classic New York City hip hop. At the risk of sounding bias, it’s hard for us to say anything bad about Joey BadA$$, as he is an 18 year old independent artist reminiscent of the classic days of hip-hop. With tracks like “95 till infinity” Joey is out to show us that even though he is 18, he is here to stay. Joey BadA$$ is definitely in touch with youth and pop culture, which may be one of the most interesting things on his album. On his song “Death to YOLO” he jumps into the reality of living life to the fullest instead of throwing out dumb memes to fill in a chorus. There are 17 tracks on this tape and Joey goes in hard on every one.

Reign is undeniably the ‘Hit’ on the album but Joey is no one trick pony. He boasts some pretty serious collaborations with major producers, including The Alchemist, DOOM, DJ Premier, and Lee Bannon. Joey also pays homage to one of the fallen Pro Era members and one of his best friends, Capital Steez, with his song “#LongLiveSteelo”. The song chronicles their close-knit friendship, portraying another one of Joey’s gifts, which is his ability to allow the listener to relate. Right now he has a music video out for the track “95 to infinity” which is a play on the Souls of Mischief classic song, “93 til infinity” and his message is read loud and clear as Joey wants us to know he is resilient and here to stay. This mixtape was dope and we're looking forward to many more mixtapes from Joey BadA$$ in the future. Now with that in mind check out “Summer Knights” because not only is the tape fire its also free! Go download it now and you be the judge.
